(1) Dear Alice, Recently I asked a long-time (married) friend "what if," meaning what if we had met each other at another time. This sparked a heart to heart talk about our friendship and the past. Near the end of our talk I told him how I felt, and he said some things, too. The conversation got carried away a bit, and now I feel awkward and told him I need to put some space between this and me. I had no idea I would feel the way I do now, and I hope I have not ruined our friendship by asking for some space. It was only fair to tell him since I didn't want him to think I just vanished. We met at college and then reconnected years later at work, and he has been a wonderful support for me. I feel it's better to uncover a truth than to wonder and assume, however, the past is the past. I hope this can be reconciled.
[back to top] Dear Alice, RE: Told him my true feeling... Honesty is the most important thing to keep in mind. The more you kept this bottled up, the more it will drive you crazy. While it may change the terms of your friendship, at least you will know the truth. While I was in the same situation as you, I opened up my heart and lost her, but at least I know the truth.
