(1) Dear Alice, I am commenting on the Flatulence question. I also suffer from this and have done my own research and discovered I lack enough of the enzyme alpha-galactosidase needed to break down the sugars that ferment, causing excess gas. I have not been able to locate this enzyme in health food stores. I have only found it in the name brand Beano and the Walgreens brand of this product. A person who suffers from this could do as I did and pay attention to the signals your body gives you when eating certain foods. I chose to eliminate or reduce my intake of many foods to avoid this discomfort. When I do indulge in such foods, I take the enzyme during the meal with little to no discomfort. I hope other sufferers can benefit from this info.
[back to top] This is something I have developed over the past week or two, and you have mentioned fruit as a possible cause. I have been consuming more fruit since joining the Weight Watchers program 6 weeks ago, as well as salads and vegetables, together with less meat. This extremely difficult problem must be my system's way of saying it needs more balance between my old and my new eating habits. Thank you for addressing the problem. I will look for the charcoal and/or enzymes mentioned, and hope they help me 'quiet down'! It would be interesting to know whether other Weight Watcher members have experienced the same problem due to diet changes. Thanks again.
