Morality of masturbation

Dear Alice,

I have guilty feelings after masturbating. I'm not sure if it's morally wrong or not. I know I should probably just go ask a priest but it's kind of an embarrassing thing to talk to a priest about. I really enjoy it but I am really confused with whether or not it's wrong. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Dear Reader,

Biologically speaking, masturbation is as right and normal as sneezing, coughing, laughing, and yawning. The morality of masturbation, as it relates to religious beliefs, is something that you will have to determine with the help of clergy (your priest may be more used to masturbation conversations than you think), friends, family, books, and/or life experiences. The answers don't have to come today, but arriving at conclusions about sex-related stuff that you can live with may be the only way to say good-bye to guilt.

Alice leaves you with one of her favorite, thought-provoking quotes on this subject:

"True guilt is guilt at the obligation one owes to oneself to be oneself. False guilt is guilt felt at not being what other people feel one ought to be or assume that one is."

— R.D. Laing (1961)
