Dear Readers, Two of Go Ask Alice!'s readers have recently responded about Fibromyalgia, a Q & A posted on September 6, 1996. They were very upset to read, "So, is fibromyalgia the '90s term for the disease most often suffered by whiners and complainers?".
Alice wants you to know that this was never her opinion of fibromyalgia. As worded and presented, Alice did not mean to imply that individuals suffering from fibromyalgia are whiners and complainers, and that fibromyalgia is not a real disease. As you continue to read, Alice explains that this is what fibromyalgia was commonly thought of when it was first identified. Since then, fibromyalgia has been gaining acceptance in being defined as a real disease. Alice emphasizes that she did not intend to cause any (emotional) harm, and sincerely apoligizes for any confusion and grief this statement may have created. The controversial statement has thus been removed based on the understanding that some of Alice' s readers may be offended to some degree.
