Coffee and breast cysts

Dear Alice, What is in coffee that causes benign breast cysts? Signed, Ex coffee drinker

Dear Ex coffee drinker,

Benign breast cysts, also called a fibrocystic condition, occur when breast cells retain fluid and develop small sacs that may make the breasts look lumpy or feel sore. This fluid retention and cyst development frequently occurs during ovulation and/or just before menstruation. Theories which advocate eliminating caffeine from your diet to reduce and possibly eradicate cysts are the reason coffee is implicated in breast cyst formation. The caffeine theory has not been proven scientifically; however, many women have found that reducing their caffeine intake has coincided with reductions in the size and number of cysts. Other dietary recommendations for women with benign breast cysts include reducing fatty and fried foods, reducing salt intake, and limiting all foods, beverages and aspirin which contain caffeine. Vitamin B6 supplements (100 to 200 milligrams daily) have been said to be useful in reducing cysts as well as two to four grams of evening primrose oil taken daily. Take your next opportunity to talk with your gynecologist or Women's Health Provider if you are concerned about benign breast cysts.
