TC student looking for uptown gay hangout

Dear Alice,

I am a first year student at TC who recently moved into the CU area. I seem to be having difficulties adjusting to graduate school. First, I am not being able to manage my time correctly, even though it seems that I have more extra time than when I was an undergraduate. Though my grades are good (B+ average), I feel that I am always behind on my readings. Second, I am starting to feel alone. I live in my own apartment, and all the friends I have live downtown. I try to avoid going downtown because I end up staying out too late. Third, even though there are Gay dances at Columbia, I don't know any other places to hang out here in the CU area. Any suggestions? Thanks, Adapting to TC

Dear Adapting to TC,

Graduate school is very different than undergraduate, you're right. Your time is definitely more self-motivated, and the social factors are not built-in as they are during the undergraduate years. My suggestion is to join some clubs or student organizations that you might be interested in, and meet people with similar interests. You can call Teachers College Office of Student Affairs to get a list of active student groups, 678-3406.

There is also a Lesbian, Bisexuals, and Gays at Teachers College group (LBGTC). Their mission is to broaden the social, educational and political awareness of Teachers College affiliates and the community at large through a wide variety of programs and activities. In addition to twice monthly meetings, the organization sponsors special events at Teachers College, networks with various groups associated with Columbia University, and participates in activities in the New York metropolitan area. There is an educational committee, a political committee, and of course, a social committee, which programs monthly screenings of contemporary films that are of interest to the committee, in addition to social gatherings and excursions. Call 678-0884 for more info or to get involved. Welcome to grad school!
