Dear Alice,
Could I have the final, definitive, last word on what type of
contraception is best to use with a condom?
Thanks,
Unsure
Dear Unsure,
A good quality condom in and of itself is a birth control method with a
failure rate of about 2 percent when used as directed, although,
typically, its failure rate is about 12 percent. Diaphragms, IUDs,
cervical caps, and spermicidal foams, creams, or jellies all will
contribute to greater efficacy when used in combination with a condom. For
example, a condom used in conjunction with a spermicidal foam, cream, or
jelly provides close to 100% protection against pregnancy.
Remember that the "best" contraception is always the method which works
best for you and your partner. If you will be using condoms with multiple
partners, then spermicidal cream, jelly, or foam used with a condom will
prove quick, cheap, and effective. If you will be using condoms with a
single partner, you may want to investigate longer-term barrier methods,
such as a cervical cap or diaphragm. The important thing, obviously,
is consistency. You need to figure out what you and your partner can
realistically do every time while still enjoying your sexuality. If you
need more information, make an appointment with a health care provider in
